A Beginner's Guide to Natural Skincare
The natural beauty aisle can feel like a test you didn't study for — ten steps, twenty actives, and a new "essential" every week. It doesn't need to be that complicated. A good natural routine is really just three habits done well. Here's how to start.
Before products, two principles. First, fewer, better things: three items you use every day beat ten you use once. Second, patience: skin renews on its own schedule, so give any routine a few weeks before you judge it. With that in mind, here are the three steps.
Step 1 — Cleanse gently
Cleansing is where most people overdo it. Harsh, stripping washes leave skin tight and trigger it to overcompensate, which is why "squeaky clean" is rarely a good sign. A gentle, plant-based cleanser removes the day without dismantling your skin barrier. Look for botanicals like neem and rose, which clean while staying calm and mild.
How: once or twice a day, massage in for a few seconds, rinse with lukewarm — not hot — water, and pat dry. Our rose & neem cleanser is built for exactly this.
Step 2 — Nourish with a facial oil
This is the step that quietly does the heavy lifting. A few drops of a well-chosen oil replaces what cleansing removes and helps soft, supple skin hold onto moisture. Cold-pressed almond oil is a forgiving place to begin — light enough for most skin, rich in vitamin E, and unlikely to upset sensitive types.
How: warm two to three drops between your palms and press (don't rub) into slightly damp skin at night. If you're oily or acne-prone, start two or three nights a week and build up. A little cold-pressed almond oil goes a long way.
If you only change one thing, change your cleanser. Stop stripping your skin and half the problems quietly solve themselves.
Step 3 — Treat once a week
A weekly treatment is where tradition shines. A herbal ubtan — a paste of ground botanicals like saffron and sandalwood — gently lifts away dead skin and leaves a natural glow, without the abrasiveness of harsh scrubs. Once a week is plenty; more can do more harm than good.
How: mix the powder with water, yoghurt or rosewater into a paste, leave for ten minutes, then rinse. Our saffron & sandalwood ubtan is a classic starting point.
What about the rest?
Sun protection by day is non-negotiable, and a simple aloe vera gel is a useful all-rounder for soothing after sun or calming irritation. Beyond that, resist the urge to add. Master these three steps first; you can always layer in more once they're second nature.
That's the whole routine: cleanse, nourish, treat weekly. You'll find every product mentioned here in our beauty & skincare range, all plant-based and free of harsh synthetics.
